GROUND DEFORMATION IN THE VESUVIUS AREA

The geodetic surveillance system in the Vesuvius area has been active since the early ‘70's  and has evolved as the existing systems were up-dated and with the implementation of new surveillance systems. The system has not shown any significant phenomenon of ground deformation; only in some limited areas have subsidence phenomena been observed, which in all probability are not linked to the dynamic of the volcano. Such areas are: the crater, with a subsidence of approximately 0.5 cm/year, probably linked to phenomena of compaction and landslides caused by the steep slopes, one area to the NE of the crater and one to the SE of the crater.
